Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the site of the first Library in Tacoma. Lots of things to see in this area.

History: This site was adopted from jamc379, who first placed it here on 2/10/2006. The container has been changed, and no longer has room for trinkets. Bring your own marking instrument. Please no stamps, just log the date and your name to keep the logs tidy and leave plenty of room for others to sign.

To See: This is arguably one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Tacoma, with many historical homes and landmarks, including the site of Tacoma's First Library.

The beautiful brick main building to the north, which I previously and mistakenly reported as the Headquarters for Weyerhauser Corporation, is now owned by the Northwest Baptist Seminary, and being rented by Amazing Grace Christian Church. On a recent tour, I was informed that the site is actually the second residence of the Weyerhauser family. The first residence was a stately Victorian, very beautiful in its own right, but the first Mrs. Weyerhauser was very frail and sickly, and after her passing, Mr. Weyerhauser fell in love and married her maid, who just couldn't stand living in the house that she used to take care of as an employee, so they tore the original house down, and put up this stately brick mansion. There is an absolutely stunning garden in the back that can be rented for weddings or other celebrations with a view that is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful!

Also nearby is the house used as one of the locations for the film, "Bird On A Wire" starring Goldie Hawn and Mel Gibson. I'm going to have to rent the movie again and figure out exactly which house, but it may be the house directly across the street from the cache. If not, it may be the house in the same location, but south one block.

Heading southward you'll pass the original Frank Russell home on the end of the triangle block as you head south away from the cache, and if you head northward away from the cache, you'll pass the newest Russell home on the shoreward side of the curve.

Crossing the street to the block wall, and looking to the south along the waterfront you can see locations of a few of the nearby caches along the waterfront. Hidden by the trees in front of you and to your left are a few more waterfront caches. From the north portion of the wall you have an excellent view of Quartermaster Harbor on Vashon Island, and if you're quiet and look carefully down the hill, you might even see some deer.Thank you EAWF for letting us adopt your caches.
