While the battle of Helm's Deep was raging, Merry and Pippin were busy trying to convince Treebeard and the other Ents to go and help their friends. Hours passed as the Ents talked, and when Merry and Pip thought they had finally reached a decision, they learned that they had only just finished saying their names. It takes a LOOOONG time to say anything in Old Entish. Don't be hasty.
Finally though, after a few more hours, the Ents decide that they want to be called Switzerland and be neutral in the affairs of the world around them. As Treebeard is taking the hobbits back home, they convince him to head toward Isengard (Saruman's stronghold, with the tower of Orthanc at its center).
If Treebeard sees the damage done to the forest by Saruman and his orcs, maybe then he'll fight. After all, some of those trees were his friends.
Their plan works, and the Ents soon set about the task of dismantling Isengard, rock by rock and stone by stone. They burst the dam that Saruman has built to keep the river Isen at bay, thus flooding Isengard and trapping Saruman in his tower. If you look directly west from near the posted coordinates you may be able to see Saruman hiding in his tower.
It is about then that our heroes arrive from Helm's Deep to find Merry and Pippin feasting and smoking (it's tobacco... really). They also find Isengard looking like the morning after a really good frat party: flooded, steaming, and bodies strewn about everywhere. Saruman is trapped in his tower, and Gandalf tries to convince him to give them hints on how to find Sauron's most evil cache, "Eye of Sauron". Saruman knows all about the cache, because he has one of the Palantir, a "seeing stone" that allows him to see into the center of Sauron's eye and discover the secrets of his cache. No hints are forthcoming, however, because before he can speak, Saruman is killed by his henchman, who was once a man of Rohan and had just about had enough of Saruman's crap.
As Saruman fell from the top of Orthanc, he dropped a small cache at the base of the tower that may have some clues for you, if you can find it. Ok, so he didn't "drop" it exactly... there was a lot of flailing going on and he gave it a bloody great toss. It landed at the posted coordinates. When retrieving the cache, please be careful and use the "handle" if necessary.
Congrats to GreatOdyssey on the FTF!
