THIS IS THE FIRST EARTHCACHE IN PARAGUAY.

One of the most striking things about Paraguay is the color of the soil. Soil color tells one a lot about the composition of the soil, as well as how it has been affected by weather. Interestingly, soil color usually does not effect the behavior of the soil.
From a chemical perspective, soil color is often determined by the degree of oxidation (so called "redox" reactions) that has occurred within the soil. The more water in the soil, the less oxygen and consequently less oxidation within that soil sample, leading to less brilliance. In contrast more vivid colorization maybe found in arid or well drained soil. Often one can determine the moisture content of soil by looking at its color.
Soil can be found in a variety of colors, including gray, black, white, red, brown, yellow, and even green. Soil that is dark brown or black usually contains a lot of organic matter. However, the presence of manganese oxide may also make soil black. Yellow or red soil often indicates the presence of iron oxide, while green soil color suggests the presence of glauconite and a white color the presence of calcite.
Since the 1930's the United States Department of Agriculture has adopted the Munsell soil color chart for all soil research. this classification scheme rates soil color in three categories: hue(red, yellow or blue), value (lightness or darkness) and chroma (paleness or strength).
