Geocache Description:

Another cache in the BCN (Birmingham Canal Navigations) series - this time alongside an important and busy railway line.

It is always a pleasure for me to cycle down this lovely stretch of the canal. I first came here back in 1980 after enrolling at Birmingham University. It was always interesting to see the various trains which passed very close to the canal. Having checked on the internet, there are 313 scheduled trains which pass this point daily. Being on the South West to North East corridor route these trains go to interesting places such as Penzance, Newquay, York, and Edinburgh. If each train has just 200 passengers this equates to over 60,000 people passing this point daily (22 million per annum), and this is in addition to the joggers, walkers cyclists and barges who use the canal and canal towpath daily. If you approach Birmingham from the South on any one of these trains and take in the view you will see just how excellent the canal path in this area are - indeed you would not know that you were in a depths of a large City.

The cache is named after a locomotive which I remember passing here daily in the 1980's, often taking excited families to their holiday destinations in the South - 3rd Carabinier (no. 45135).  I am sure that you will see some trains pass as you search for this cache. Enjoy this great stretch of the canal.

Please see c/o log in Feb 2016 - the border between the railway lines and the canal has been dramatically changed. The old wooden fencing and its long time collection of ivy has been flattened and replaced by the standard railway metal fence (green). Unfortunately therefore, at least for the moment I have had to replace with a nano. I have give a quite specific hint as otherwise the search would be tedious, but at least the cache is up and running
