Geocache Description:

The cache is in the Ardington and Lockinge woodland, here you will find a Millennium Sundial and Solar System. The Millennium sundial consists of thirteen pairs of standing stones arranged in a semi-circle. As the day progresses shafts of light shine between each pair in turn. By using the graph on the central pair, Greenwich Mean Time can be calculated. The standing stones are Purbeck stone from the Jurassic period formed between 130-140 million years ago. Behind the middle (Noon) pair of stones, markers are set into the ground indicating the Summer and Winter Solstice and the Spring and Autumn Equinox. The Planetary model of the solar system is set into the ground. Around the Sun are the nine planets of the solar system. Each planet has been placed in it's position for January the 1st 2000. Because of the complexity of the planets orbits and the vastness of the Solar System the scales of the model have been adapted.
