Ofidiofoobia on irratsionaalne hirm madude ees. Paljudel selle hirmu all kannatajatel ei tekita hirmureaktsiooni mitte ainult looduses mao kohtamine, vaid ka lihtsalt maopildi nägemine, temast rääkimine või mõtlemine. Ofibiofoobiat arvatakse esinevat kolmandikul täiskasvanud inimestest. Seega on tegemist levinuima foobiaga.
Ofidiofoobia põhjuseks peetakse evolutsiooniliselt säilinud meie ajudesse sisse kodeeritud hirmu ohtlike mürk- või kägistajamadude (ja kõige nendega sarnaneva) ees, mis on olnud vajalik selleks, et ellu jääda.

Ophidiophobia is an irrational fear of snakes. Some sufferers are not just afraid of an encounter of a snake but they are also frightened of seeing pictures of snakes, talking and even thinking about snakes, Roughly a third of adult humans are ophidiophobic, making this the most common reported phobia.
It has been found that our brain is evolutionarily conditioned to be afraid of dangerous venomous and constrictor snakes and all snake-like forms to survive.
