Vorab ein wenig was zur Geschichte dieses Ortes...
Der Essener Dom, auch Münsterkirche genannt, war von der Mitte des 9. Jahrhunderts bis 1802 die Kirche des Essener Frauenstifts. Um 850 gründeten der Hildesheimer Bischof Altfrid und Gersuit I., die ersten überlieferte Äbtissin, eine religiöse Gemeinschaft für Mädchen und Frauen des sächsischen Adels: das Stift Essen. Aus der um das Stift gelegenen Siedlung entwickelte sich später die Stadt Essen. Der Stiftsbezirk umfasste die heutige Dominsel, den Bereich des jetzigen Generalvikariates und den Burgplatz samt Domhof. Im Zuge der Säkularisation wurde das Stift Essen aufgelöst. Die Stiftskirche "Ss. Cosmas und Damian" wurde zusammen mit der Anbetungskirche der Pfarre St. Johann übergeben. Sie war nun die Hauptpfarrkirche der mit der Industrialisierung rasch zur Großstadt anwachsenden Stadt Essen. Die Stiftsgebäude wurden nach und nach abgerissen und die Pfarrkirche mit der Bistumsgründung 1958 zur Dom- bzw. Kathedralkirche des Ruhrbistums erhoben.
Vom mittelalterlichen Erbe Essens blieben im Herzen der Stadt die Münsterkirche Ss. Cosmas und Damian, die Anbetungskirche St. Johann sowie der Kreuzgang erhalten. Der Essener Dom ist aufgrund seiner Jahrhunderte alten Geschichte und Bedeutung für die Stadt in jedem Fall einen Besuch wert. Neben der weit über die Grenzen des Ruhrgebietes bekannten "Goldenen Madonna", die etwa im Jahr 980 entstand und eine der frühesten Plastiken des europäischen Mittelalters ist, und dem "Siebenarmigen Leuchter", der die älteste erhaltene christliche Nachbildung des jüdischen Tempelleuchters ist, gibt es hier vieles zu sehen und zu bewundern. Wichtige Hinterlassenschaft der Frauengemeinschaft ist der über Jahrhunderte gewachsene Stiftsschatz, der zahlreiche, bedeutende Kunstwerke beherbergt und unbedingt einen Besuch wert ist. Zudem laden der Dom und der Kreuzgang ein, dem Trubel der Stadt zu entfliehen und ein wenig Ruhe zu tanken.
Hinweis
Der Dom kann zeitweise (z.B. während Gottesdiensten, Konzerten u.a.) nicht besichtigt werden. Bitte beachtet die Öffnungszeiten und benehmt euch während eures Besuchs dem Ort angemessen.

Um diesen virtuellen Cache loggen zu können, müßt ihr ein paar Fragen per praktischem Webformular beantworten. Sobald alle Fragen korrekt beantwortet sind, erhaltet ihr automatisch eure Logerlaubnis.

Atrium
Nachdem ihr durch einen der Eingänge des Doms gegangen seid, befindet ihr euch im Atrium, das die Münsterkirche und die Anbetungskirche St. Johann verbindet. Durch die Laterne in der Mitte des Hofes blickt man in die moderne Adveniatkrypta.

First, a little something about the history of this place...
From the mid-ninth century until 1802, the Essen Cathedral, also known as Münsterkirche (Münster-Church), was the church of Essen's convent for women. At around 850 bishop Altfrid of Hildesheim and Gersuit I., the first known abbess, founded a religious community for girls and women of the Saxon nobility: the Stift Essen (Essen Monastery). The settlement, which surrounded the monastery, later became the city of Essen. The monastery-district included today's Dominsel (cathedral-island), the area of today's Episcopal Ordinariate and the Burgplatz including the cathedral's yard. In the course of secularisation, the monastery was dissolved. The convent's church "Ss. Cosmas und Damian" and the "Anbetungskirche" (worship-church) were handed over to the "St. Johann" parish. Now it was the main church of the - due to industrialisation - quickly growing city of Essen. Over time, little by little, the monastery's buildings were demolished and with the founding of the diocese in 1958, the parish-church became the cathedral of the Ruhr diocese.
In the heart of Essen, the Münsterkirche "Ss. Cosmas und Damian", the "Anbetungskirche St. Johann" and the cloister have been preserved as part of Essen's medieval heritage. In any case, the Essen Cathedral is worth a visit, because of its centuries-old history. Besides the "Golden Madonna", which was created at around 980 and is one of the earliest sculptures from Europe's medieval times, and the "Siebenarmiger Leuchter" (seven-armed candelabra), the oldest preserved Christian reproduction of a Jewish temple-candelabra, a lot of things can be seen and admired here. A substantial legacy of the women's convent is the monastery-treasure, which has been growning over centuries and which hosts many important works of art. Definitely worth a visit. Furthermore, the cathedral and the cloister invite visitors to take a brake from the hustle of the city and enjoy some quietness.

At certain times, the cathedral cannot be inspected (e.g. during services or concerts). Please keep the opening hours in mind and behave appropriately during your visit.

Logging terms for this virtual cache
To log this virtual cache, you have to answer a couple of questions via a useful web-form. As soon as all of the questions have been answered correctly, you will be cleared for logging.
Shortly after it had been published on the internet, the answers to this cache surfaced on the internet. Since changing the questions alone wouldn't make any difference, you also have to publish a photo of yourself infront of the cathedral with your log (sample-photo see below). If you don't want to be seen in the photo, you will have to write your cacher-name on a piece of paper and hold it into the picture. The name should be readable. Your GPS, a funny puppet or names that have been digitally inserted into the picture are insufficient!
Logs without a previous log-clearance and/or without a photo that complies with the previously mentioned requirements will be deleted without comment.

After passing one of the main entrances, you find yourselves in the atrium, which connects the Münsterkirche and the Anbetungskirche St. Johann. The modern Adveniatkrypta (crypt) can be seen thorugh the lantern in the middle of the yard.
