Geocache Description:

Easy find along highway 30 near Westport Oregon.

This tunnel is one of the oldest surviving railroad tunnels in the Pacific Northwest. The exact date of is construction is not clear, but it appears to date around the 1880's. First used by oxen to move logs from the woods to the Columbia River it was later widened to accommodate a locomotive. The railroad tracks and tunnel were abandoned in 1915. I found this tunnel about 3 years ago reading about it in a book on Oregon logging history and thought it would be a nice place to put a cache and share the history behind it.

the cache is just off Highway 30 on the east side of Westport. When you turn off Highway 30 you will drive on a short dead end road that is the original Highway 30 running to the coast.
