Geocache Description:

nfp
Lythrum Salicaria
Lythrum Salicaria is the scientific name for Purple Loosestrife.
So Why is the purple loosestrife considered to be bad?
It invades wetlands, eventually killing out existing plant species such as cattails, grasses and rare plants. It doesn't provide any food or habitat for wildlife. It may end up clogging drainage ditches, changing the wetland habitat, needed by birds and other wildlife, into a waterway.

This cache was launched at the 2019 Purple Loosestrife Removal event GC865GR. It is one of the four geocaches placed for that event. The Crosswinds Cache Crew collaborates with the River Raisin Institute to host the invasive removal day

The Crosswinds Marsh Nature Interpretive preserve is providing a replacement wildlife wetlands for habitat that was removed by the Detroit Metro Airport expansion. Crosswinds Marsh Wetland Interpretive Preserve is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country. It was built to replace the wetlands that were paved over to expand Wayne County's (the McNamara terminal). Wayne County, The area is managed by the Wayne County Parks.
