"Caching" in on on another of Lexington's claims to fame, this one will take you back in time. Leave yourself a li'l time for this one to truly appreciate the entire estate.
This virtual cache will take you to one of Lexington's most famous historical homes and what's left of it's surrounding estate. First built in 1806, this mansion was once the home of Henry Clay; Senator, Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, and Presidential Candidate three times. The surviving mansion was rebuilt in 1857 by Clay's son James.
Please obey the posted hours for this cache. It is helpful (but not completely necessary) for the buildings to be open to find the necessary information. That said, you should be able to find the necessary SEVEN answers from outside with a li'l cunning. Hours:
Mon - Sat: 10am - 4:30pm, Sunday: 1pm - 4:30pm
Closed January, Holidays, and Mondays from November - March
You can complete this cache with a dog but would likely skip questions #7 and #8 and your dog would need to be on a leash.
To log the cache, you have to answer SEVEN (yes 7) OF THE FOLLOWING 9 questions:
- (Easy) In what year was Ashland Registered as a "National Historic Landmark"?
- (Easy) What were the two buildings with the cone shaped roofs used for?
- (Easy) Which building houses the "Meat Salting Troughs"?
- (Medium) How many rooms are there in the Privy? Other than the obvious, what else was the privy used for?
- (Medium) What type of gas machine was used to fuel the gas lamps in the house?
- (Medium) Where did the large brass bell come from?
- (Hard) Who won the Henry Clay Award in 1996?
- (Hard) Who sculpted the statue of the boy and birds?
- (Hard) What did Henry Clay import in 18?? to promote scientific methods of farming?
