Awliscombe is a small village near Honiton through which we all probably drive too fast! Although dismissed in the following manner by at least one author – “AWLISCOMBE contains little of interest except the church (St. Michael), which is a typical 15th century church in the East Devon manner “ there is at least one other puzzle hidden here which I am hoping local historians will help me to unravel and record.
The matter to which I refer is linked to memorials in the village and high on the hill overlooking the valley.
This cache (35mm film case - log book and pencil only) is located near a memorial in the middle of Awliscombe and you will note the name Capt G Weldon RFA amongst the others commemorated as you sit and sign the log.
If you now move to “An especial memorial”, the puzzle deepens.
