INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #603 "Crown Hill Medal of Honor"
This quest will bring you to the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Crown Hill is the third largest private cemetery in the United States with over 188,000 burials. There are over 20 caches in Crown Hill. It would be quite easy to spend a day here. The grounds open at 8:00AM and close at either 5:00 or 6:00PM, depending on the time of year. I would advise you check the Crown Hill web site if you plan on visiting late in the afternoon.
This is a simple offset cache. The coordinates will lead you to the grave of Captain Charles Brouse. The cache will be 118 feet to the north-northeast. You should park west of the cache. If you approach from the east you will have a hill to climb and the terrain rating would be a bit higher.
Captain Charles Brouse- Medal of Honor Recipient (There are three Medal of Honor recipients at Crown Hill Cemetery.)
Charles Bourse was a Captain in the 100th Indiana Infantry regiment. The 100th participated in the Siege of Vicksburg and the siege of Jackson Mississippi before heading to eastern Tennessee. It was there the regiment participated in the battle at Chattanooga. Captain Brouse was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863 during the battle of Chattanooga. Here is the explanation from his medal citation: "To encourage his men whom he had ordered to lie down while under severe fire, and who were partially protected by slight earthworks, himself refused to lie down, but walked along the top of the works until he fell severely wounded". Captain Brouse eventually recovered from his wounds, but was discharged from the US Army because of his medical condition. He was not awarded his Medal of Honor until 1899.
The cache container is A CAMOUFLAGED PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE. As mentioned above this is an offset, 118' north-northeast of the coordinates.
