This cache is named after the 1959 Newbery Honor Book-award
winning young adult novel, "
My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead
George. A copy of the book is in the cache, but please
don't trade for it. You're welcome to stop and enjoy it
before resuming your hike, however -- and perhaps you'll want to go
get your own copy thereafter.
Park at N44 22.324 W72 38.394. It can be a
little tricky getting to the parking coordinates if you’re not
familiar with the Middlesex area since many roads marked on
maps are not actually through roads accessible in all seasons
and most are dirt.
The easiest way to get to the cache without
a lengthy drive on dirt roads is to head north out of
Montpelier on Route 12, turn left on Shady Rill Road, follow
Shady Rill until you pass Rumney Memorial Elementary School,
and then follow Bear Swamp Road (dirt) to the marked
trailhead. You will go about 2.9 miles from the school before
you come to the parking area.
From the parking area, you'll follow a nice wide forest road to
a formal trailhead and then come to a sign-in box. Don't
forget to sign in.
From there you've got about a mile to go to a fork where the
White Rock trail and the Mount Hunger trail split -- you can't miss
the sign. There's a decent view of the sky at the fork where
you can get a good fix with your GPS.
Behind the sign you'll see some old white birches. Look
around the boulders northwest of the birches.
Cache history: This cache was originally
placed by bigzig and wnt2w8lift, two Middlesex-area
cachers. They are no longer active in geocaching.
In May of 2005, Otter and Lemur adopted and maintained the cache.
In January of 2006, BilboB adopted it.
*****UPDATE April 22, 2006***** I just want to thank everyone who
has taken the time out to find this cache and to all who have yet
to find it. I will be deployed in support of the Global War on
Terrorism to Iraq for about 14 months. Darrel of DJ and Cal has
graciously agreed to adopt my caches and maintain them while I am
gone and I really appreciate that. Thanks everyone and see you next
year!
