În anul 1913, la darea în folosinţă a Palatului Culturii din Târgu-Mureş o întreagă aripă a impunătorului edificiu a primit destinaţia de bibliotecă, pentru satisfacerea nevoilor de lectură ale populaţiei din municipiu.
În cele aproape nouă decenii de existenţă, biblioteca târgumureşeană adaugă funcţiei sale publice calităţi care o detasează de alte instituţii similare, consacrându-i valoare şi distincţie, nu numai prin volumul mare de cărţi şi documentele pe care le deţine (peste 900.000 unităţi de inventar), ci şi prin bogăţia şi varietatea sporită a informaţiilor ce le ofera populaţiei. Cititorii precum şi cei care au dirijat evoluţia pe multe planuri a instituţiei, printr-o echilibrata politică de dezvoltare şi selecţie a publicaţiilor, au avut în atenţia lor crearea unui fond de conservare (un exemplar din toate publicaţiile colecţionate), conferindu-i reale posibilităţi de cercetare în ansamblu a unei probleme dintr-un anumit domeniu, în orice moment dat.
Sub aspectul structurii lingvistice colecţiile au fost influenţate de regimurile statale care s-au succedat în acest spaţiu în decursul timpului. Iniţial, biblioteca s-a constituit în exclusivitate pe carte de limba maghiară (cu mici excepţii în limba germană), instituind şi dezvoltând în paralel şi un fond românesc în perioada interbelică, eliminat din colecţiile sale în perioada Dictatului (1940-1944), revenind la o dezvoltare normală în conformitate cu structura de limba a populaţiei dupa această dată, până în zilele noastre. Este important faptul că în tot decursul existenţei sale, nu au fost distruse ori transferate cărţi, ele fiind retrase numai din punct de vedere al accesului publicului, fiind repuse în circuitul informaţional după încetarea restricţiilor.
Despre cache: Cache-ul este localizat în interiorul clădirii bibliotecii, la parter, la „Secția Împrumut”. Biblioteca este deschisă de luni până vineri, între orele 09:00 - 20:00, așadar încadrați-vă în acest interval de timp. Doamnele bibliotecare știu despre ce e vorba, așadar veți putea căuta nestingheriți. Cache-ul conține cărți în interior, iar rugămintea noastră ar fi ca dacă luați o carte să lăsați în locul ei o altă carte, nu cu orice alt tip de obiect.

In 1913, at the commissioning of the Palace of Culture in Targu-Mures, an entire wing of the imposing edifice received the destination of library for satisfying the reading needs of the population in the city.
In the almost nine decades of existence, the library added to its public function other qualities that sets it apart from other similar institutions, consacrating its value and distinction, not only by the sheer volume of books and documents in its possession (over 900,000 units of inventory) but also through its enhanced richness and variety of information given to the population. Readers and those who directed its evolution on several institutional levels, through a balanced policy of development and selection of publications, had their attention focused on creating a conservation fund (a copy of all publications collected), giving real general research opportunities regarding a problem in a particular field at any time.
In terms of linguistic structure, the collections were influenced by state regimes that have succeeded in this space over time. Originally, the library was founded exclusively on Hungarian-written books (with some exceptions in German) establishing and developing in parallel a Romanian-written book fund during the interwar period, which was removed from its public collections in the Dictate period (1940-1944), returning to a normal development according to the language structure of the population by that date until today. It is important that throughout the course of its existence, there haven't been any books destroyed or transferred, books only being withdrawn in terms of public access, being restorated in the informational circuit after the termination of certain restrictions.
About the cache: The cache is located inside the library building, on the ground floor, inside the lending section room („Secția Împrumut”). The library opening hours are from Monday to Friday, between 9 AM - 20 PM, so plan your visit properly. The librarians know about the cache, so you can search freely inside the room. The cache contains books, so we have a favour to ask: if you want to take a book, please replace it with another book, not with anything else.
