This cache is one of a series based around the Fife Stop Line, a
second world war ani-invasion defensive structure built in 1940/41,
see cache GC11H67 for more details.
This is an opportunity to inspect some ani-tank obsticles close up
because there are half a dozen moss covered examples in a wood
right next to the road. These were used to prevent tanks from going
around roadblock which was also situated here. If you look over the
wall, on the other side of the road you will see what remains of
the concrete blocks used to construct the roadblock.
This structure would have consisted of large concrete blocks placed
on either side of the road and in the event of invasion, steel
girders would have been dropped into the gaps between them thus
completely blocking the road.
On the eve of war, the British Army conducted experiments to come
up with a workable roadblock design which was then installed all
over the country. It is doubtful how effective these would actually
have been because a structure capable of withstanding the light
tanks used by the British would probably have been no match against
the much heavier German Panzers.
