Geocache Description:

The hill is home to seven cemeteries run by the city, the Masons, Oddfellows, Redman, Foresters, Pioneers and Hooper & Weaver. There is a lot of history here, one such story is about the wide grave about 150ft from the gate on the left entering from Kidder street. The inscription off the Brennans site barely hints at a tragic fate.

Michael Brennan, a man of education and refined sensibilites was sent from New York to superintend operations of the mine on Massachusetts Hill. At first successful, he then encountered defeats that made him feel he had let down those who invested money and confidence in his management. The rich strike eluded him.
On Feb 22, 1858 the bodies of his entire family were discovered in their home. Brennan had administered Prussic acid to his wife and three small children, then to himself. He left a letter saying he could not bear to see his family living in poverty and disgrace. Much ligation followed and the mine was closed in 1863 and then reopened in April 1864. working at the bottom of Brennan's shaft only a few feet from where he abandoned work, they struck the ledge Brennan had sought. (thank you seanlee1969 for providing the history.)
