The " Old Trail " I am describing was the one most used after the great land survey and after settlers arrived to begin fencing homesteads . Roads were shifted for the most part to follow road allowances . where obstacle's made that impossible they often detoured across private land .In some area's no one took up a homestead and some of the really old trails survived. This cache is a bison tube with only a log .
From the cache if you look west you can see the imprint of an old trail just north of the fence line . It went west for near 1/2 mile then turned south through Whitecap land passing about 1/2 mile west of 219 . Once south of reserve land and a marsh area it passed through French Flats close to the present 219 path . The second option was a trail from the cache to the south east following the rim of the sand hills , passing through the east side of Whitecap village . It then forked once more with one fork heading east to Dundurn and the other following the rim of the hills until it met the west trail a little south of Round Prairie cemetery . This trail was through pasture land an you encountered many gates . The custom was to leave them open or closed as you found them. Leave a gate open and stock would escape , close an open gate and stock may be blocked from water .The area now the Dundurn Army Camp held some ranches and homestead's that were forced to vacate when the army took control . The northern portion of the camp was established around 1950 when the Dundurn community pasture was fenced . Up to now it has been shared, with the army gradually taking more control and entry becoming much more difficult .
