57. Den Grooten Oorlog : Achter het Front :

In 2014 wordt het begin van WO I herdacht. Bij deze gelegenheid zullen wij een nieuwe reeks caches uitbrengen, dit langs de volledige frontlijn, van Nieuwpoort tot Mesen.
Ze worden onderverdeeld in verschillende 'veldslagen'. Elke veldslag bestaat uit 8 gebeurtenissen, met aan het eind een bonus. Iedere reeks bestaat uit korte multi's of tradi's.
Het is de bedoeling dat met een tussenperiode van 1 à 2 maanden een volgende veldslag 'uitgevochten' wordt.
Denk er aan : ook al ligt een gedenkteken of begraafplaats schijnbaar midden de velden, er steeds een zeer goed onderhouden pad naartoe loopt.
De caches liggen nergens verborgen op de begraafplaatsen.. De antwoorden op de vragen moeten wel regelmatig op de begraafplaatsen gezocht worden. Respecteer de stilte, aub. Maak je ook het napluizen van de aanwezige registers eigen. Je zal ze hier en daar nodig hebben.
Gelieve GEEN gebruik te maken van stickers in de logboekjes. Breng aub eigen schijfgerief mee en noteer vooral de aanwezige codes. Je zal ze nog nodig hebben !
Indien je over een smartphone beschikt kan je volgende apps erop zetten: GCBuddy en GCC(Pro). Het zal je zeker en vast het nodige rekenwerk uitsparen ...

Historiek
Tijdens WO 1 was het gehucht Brandhoek relatief veilig op gebied van artilleriebeschietingen die tot voorbij de kerk van Vlamertinge reikten. Vandaar dat er hier kampementen, opslagplaatsen en medische posten ('field ambulances') werden ingericht.
De begraafplaats Brandhoek Military Cemetery is gestart in mei 1915 naast een medische post. Wegens plaatsgebrek werden de begravingen hier stopgezet in juli 1917.
Volgens het huidige register liggen er nu 602 doden uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk (waarvan 4 niet geïdentificeerd , 4 Australiërs, 63 Canadezen en 2 Duitsers (waarvan 1 niet geïdentificeerd). Dit maakt een totaal van 671 graven.
Tot juli 1917 werden slachtoffers begraven op de Military Cemetery. De inrichting van de 32nd, 3rd Australian en 44th Casualty Clearing Stations met het vooruitzicht op het komende geallieerde offensief, noodzaakten de opening van de New Military Cemetery, gevolgd door het New Military Cemetery N° 3 in augustus.
Brandhoek New Military Cemetery telt 531 Commonwealth-doden en 28 Duitse oorlogsgraven. De bijzettingen dateren van juli en augustus 1917.
De New Military Cemetery N° 3 bleef in gebruik tot in mei 1918 en telt 974 graven, allen Commonwealth-militairen.

In welk veldhospitaal stierf de kapitein die hier geëerd wordt ? Het is één van de 3 militairen die ooit tweemaal het Victoria Cross verdienden. Noteer ook zijn volledige naam.
A = 2e voornaam van de kapitein omgezet volgens A=1, B=2 …. Z=26
B = familienaam van de kapitein omgezet volgens A=1, B=2 …. Z=26
C = nummer van het veldhospitaal (nn aaa) - C = nn

Op dit kerkhof ligt Private George Albert Lewis. Oorspronkelijk werd hij ongeschikt verklaard voor de dienst . Hij liet zich echter opereren in Llanelly Hospital zodat hij zich 'fit' kon laten verklaren.
Zoek in het register volgende gegevens :
D = zijn grafnummer
E = het Engels district waarvan hij afkomstig was (omzetten volgens A=1, B=2 …. Z=26)

2014 is the year we commemorate the start of World War I. At this occasion we publish a series of new caches, alongside the Belgian frontline, from Nieuwpoort to Mesen.
They are subdivided in different “battles”. Each battle consists of 8 events, with at the end a bonus. Each series consists of short multi’s or tradi’s.
Remember: although a memorial or cemetery may be located in the middle of the fields, a well maintained walking path leads always to the site.
The caches are never hidden at the cemeteries. The answers to the questions are mostly found at the cemeteries. Please keep your silence. Also accustom yourself to explore the registers.
Please DO NOT USE stickers in the logbooks. Bring along your own pen and note the present codes. You’ll need them.

History
During World War I the hamlet Brandhoek was relatively safe from the artillery which ranged beyond the church of Vlamertinge. Hence camps, warehouses and medical facilities (field ambulances) were installed.
The Brandhoek Military Cemetery was set up in May 1915 next to a medical station. Due to the lack of burial grounds the funerals were discontinued in July 1917.
According to the current registry there are 671 graves, 602 from the United Kingdom (including 4 not identified), 4 Australian, 63 Canadian and 2 German. The set-up of the 32nd, 3rd Australian and 44th Clearing Stations with the prospect of the forthcoming Allied offensive necessitated the building of the New Military Cemetery in August 1917. Later on the New Military Cemetery n° 3 was taken in use.
Brandhoek New Cemetery counts 531 Commonwealth and 28 German war graves. The burials took place between July and August 1917. The New Military Cemetery n° 3 remained in use till May 1918. This cemetery contains 974 graves, all for Commonwealth soldiers.

At this cemetery the Private George Albert Lewis is buried. Originally he was declared unfit for service. However he had an operation at Llanelly Hospital and could go to war after his recovery.
