Commonwealth War Graves (Cimetière de Mertert) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Michc&Steffi: Wegen des Baus der neuen Appartements mit Parkplätzen in unmittelbarer Nähe meines Caches, werde ich diesen archivieren. Der Platz ist mittlerweile nicht mehr geeignet.

Due to the recent construction of an appartement complex and a parking lot near my cache, i decided to archive it. This spot ist no longer suitable for a cache.

Geocache Description:

Commonwealth War Graves

On the local churchyard of Mertert 2 British airmen who crashed on September 2nd, 1944 have been buried. The pilot and his navigator.
I did not know that until i placed this little petling OUTSIDE the cemetery and researched a little bit why there is a war grave. Now that i know, it makes this cache even more special, i think.

The 2 buried British airmen were piloting a de Havilland "Mosquito", a British multi-role combat aircraft, with a two-man crew, that served during the Second World War and the postwar era. The Mosquito was one of the few operational, front-line aircraft of the World War II era to be constructed almost entirely of wood and, as such, was nicknamed "The Wooden Wonder".
The Mosquito was also known affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito was adapted to many other roles during the air war, including: low- to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a transport.
Anyway, the cache should remember those two airmen but also all the other victims of a terrible and ugly war.

The cache is NOT on the cimetery. You do NOT have to enter the cimetery. But feel free to do so. But remember where you are so don't do anything unappropriate.
The container is a petling. Please hide it like you found it.

And as always, respect the nature an Happy Caching.
