Geocache Description:

Dive Cache M/F Ærøsund

Some Details about M/F Ærøsund:
The M/F Ærøsund ferry is a relatively young Baltic Sea wreck. It was controlled scuttled in October 2014 and has now become one of the most interesting artificial reefs in Denmark. Prior to its scuttling, the ferry was completely decontaminated and made safe for diving. Now, just after a few years on ground, the flora and fauna of the ocean have made themselves at home in this habitat.

The wreck is placed approximately 19 meters below the surface in the Ringsgård Basin, South Fyn Archipelago. Just about 500 meters off the coast, near the village of Ballen on Fynen. The top of the wreck (the funnel) is only 6 meters below the surface, Bridge- and Bardeck could be discovered in 10m and the Car Deck is waiting in the deep of 16m.

The M/F Ærøsund ferry was Denmark’s last train ferry, operating between Svendborg and Ærøskøbing from 1960 to 1999. It was built at Husumer Schiffswerft, Germany as a pinnacle of modernity (1960) and was the first Danish ferry to provide its passengers with access to television whilst on board. Another new feature of the ferry was its ability to passing over from both, the stern and the bow, so car drivers were no longer required to reverse for boarding.

To find the Cache:
The boat ramp at Rantzausminde Marina can be used as starting point. When you arrive at the diving spot, you may anchor your boat to the two yellow anchor buoys attached to the stern (eastern boy) and the bow (western boy) of the wreck. Even if the ferry was made safe for divers with many tall openings in the hull, the Cache itself is placed outside the wreck – you may, but you needn’t enter the wreck. Look for a XXL Petling fixed to a chain, starboard, outside the wreck on Car Deck level (approx. 16m below sea level).

Dont't forget your pen - the Logbook is a sheet of waterresisteant Wetnote-Paper, so a pencil or graphite pen will work fine.

Pictures of your Logattempt are as well highly recommend
