This is Team Family Affair’s 8th cache. The cache is a green metal ammo box with geocaching.com stenciled on the sides. We hope you enjoy this unusual park which consists of 7 life-sized dinosaurs, as well as a great view of Rapid City and the Black Hills.
History: Dinosaur bones were actually found in this area (less than 50 feet from the park) in the early 1900s. Also found about 2 miles north of this site were fossil foot prints of a small meat-eating dinosaur (look to the North over by M-Hill). Dinosaur Park was concieved by Dr. Cleophas O'Harra- a teacher, geologist, paleontologist and former president of South Dakota School of Mines. The Park was built during the mid 1930s as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project putting men to work during the depression. During this same time the WPA also built the stone walls near the Sioux Sanitarium (looking west along Canyon lake drive) as well as most of the campgrounds, trails and dams that created many of the lakes in the Black Hills. If you are interested in dinosaur bones, we would encourage you to check out the displays at the School of Mines and Technology Dinosaur and Geology Museum (Just east of down town Rapid City). To get to the final location you will have to complete multiple steps.
To complete this cache you will need this instruction sheet, a pencil and your GPS receiver. Are you ready and up to the challenge? OK - lets get started.
Step 1: Go and find the location N 44° 04.229' and W 103° 13.546'. There is a number on the building you are standing in front of. Take that number and double it. This is the last 3 digits of the latitude for your site in Step 3.
N 44° 04.XXX' (Where XXX= building number x 2)
Step 2: Now find the location N 44° 03.083' and W 103° 13.734' (During this step- Don't forget to wave as you drive up the hill as you will be passing by the headquarters of Team Family Affair). Write down the address of the house you are standing in front of. This number is the last 3 digits of the Longitude location in the next step.
W 103° 14.YYY' (Where YYY- is the number on this building)
Step 3: Find the location: N 44° 04.XXX and W 103° 14.YYY. You should be standing on a level area with a view. Find the closest table there at the site and check the underside of the table for the final coordinates of Dinosaur Cache (written in black Magic Marker).
Step 4: Congratulations on finding the hidden coordinates-Now go find the cache!
The cache is fairly well hidden and covered from above.
