Geocache Description:

This magnetic film canister is NOT hidden on Interstate 580, look far below in the park under the freeway.

At the southwest end of a footbridge spanning the creek, I thought I had found a USGS benchmark, but upon closer inspection, it was a USGS gaging station marker. The gaging station marker is embedded in concrete just like a benchmark, and is described by the USGS as follows, "on right bank at Interstate Highway 580, 0.3 mi southeast of Independent School, and 2.2 mi east of Castro Valley." The micro-cache is just a couple feet from the gaging station marker, and is visible from the right angle. The nearby gaging station has online telemetry data. There are several ways of reaching this cache, one way is to park just outside the Don Castro Park gate entrance, and follow some stairs to a trail going around the south side of the lake. The 'dash and cache' method is to have a driver wait near a sign on Old Dublin Road that reads 'Chabot to Garin', because there is no parking on Old Dublin Road (as far as I can tell). Down a concrete driveway, shared by two residences, there is a public footbridge allowing access to the park. If you choose this method, please give the driver credit in the cache log, they helped too!
