Town Quay Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

HeapsFamily: As I no longer get to Southampton enough to maintain this properly, and I am no longer in touch with site owner, I have reluctantly decided to archive this old cache. It provided lots of fun, but time for something new!

Geocache Description:

Our first urban nano cache, which has been placed in a publicly accessible area of the docks, by kind permission of the Town Quay Manager. Please note that you do NOT have to cross any fences to find or retrieve this cache: it can be reached from within the public area. Due to muggle problems, this cache is now in it's 4th incarnation, but now almost back to original location!

Town Quay is on the site of the oldest part of the Port of Southampton - from here steamers used to depart to the Isle of Wight and further afield. Although the modern trade moved first to the Eastern Docks (Victorian times) and later the Western Docks (developed from the 1930’s until the late 1990’s) - Town Quay remains a busy place with ferries still sailing to the Isle of Wight, and across Southampton Water to Hythe. Town Quay is also home to a modern marina, as well as offices, restaurants and bars.

The cache is situated right down at the seaward end, and from here there are great views of Southampton Water, both the Eastern and Western Docks, and the “Waterside” shoreline of Hythe and Dibden Bay opposite. From the cache you can also see all four of Southampton’s cruise terminals. On most days you will see at least one cruise liner in port, at weekends often many more. Details of what you might expect to spot can be found on the Southampton VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) website. (visit link)

You are looking for a tiny black nano container, it is quite well hidden but not too sneaky, as this can be a popular area with muggles - especially fishermen, so it is designed to be picked up quite easily without attracting unwanted attention. There is parking literally next to the cache, but please note that if you intend to linger you MUST pay and display - automatic number plate recognition is in use!. (Also note that there is a height barrier if you arrive in anything bigger than a car!) Alternatively it is an easy and pleasant walk from the town and other nearby caches and areas of maritime interest, or there is bus from the station and West Quay to Town Quay (£1, or free for ferry and train ticket holders)

Enjoy the cache and the view.

Congratulations to thebiggies for FTF - 36 minutes after published!
