Geocache Description:

A nano cache located at the old CPR Station, formerly know as Stop 62.

This elegant train station was built by the CPR in 1907 to serve passenger and express traffic on its busy Regina to Edmonton line. In the early years it saw the influx of immigrants from Eastern Canada and Europe, some settling in the Saskatoon area, others going on to North-Central Saskatchewan. The depot served Saskatoon with telegraph service, daily mail, parcels and newspapers. It remained in service until 1960. While we typically see the "back" of the building today, it was the other side of the building facing the tracks that was originally the focus of attention. The central block of the building was used for a ticket and telegraph office, along with offices for the conductor and agent. A women's waiting room and lavatory were located south of the central core with a men's lavatory and smoking room on the north. Beyond these were areas for baggage to the far north and an express room to the far south. CPR offices were located on the top floor.

The station survived the sixties when many other stations across the country were removed. Efforts toward preservation of the C.P.R. station began in 1972, when it was first threatened with demolition. In 1977 it was recognized with a commemorative plaque. The C.P.R. Rail Station was nationally designated as a heritage railway station in 1989.

The building was extensively restored in 1994 giving it a new lease on life, including being the home of Tourism Saskatoon. The facade of the building, of yellow brick and Tyndall stone, has been beautifully restored. The distinctive bellcast roof has new cedar shakes. One feature that can only be seen from the North (while driving by) is the polygon tower which overlooks the tracks that used to be occupied by the railway superintendent. It is the last of Saskatoon 's "grand" train stations.

The cache is a magnetic nano. There is only room for the log. Please bring your own writing tool and you may want tweezers as well. This is a very high muggle traffic location so be stealthy. Make sure you park in the public parking lot as opposed to the lot clearly marked Private. Also please be respectful of the flowerbeds. We were able to place the cache without stepping into them so you should be able to retrieve it the same way.

Congrats to bennykidd on being the FTF!
