A Taste of the Valley: The Bannister Races Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wizard of Ooze: Unfortunately, there has been no response from the cache owner from the note posted two months ago regarding a need to check on the status of the cache, therefore I assume the owner is no longer planning to keep an active cache at the location. Please pick up any remaining bits of the cache.

Thank you,
wizard of ooze, volunteer reviewer

Geocache Description:

In the years following the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954 many towns and cities in B.C. held Bannister Races. Of course anyone knowing the history of the mile run will remember the Vancouver race. It is probably the most famous race in track history. The "impossible" had been only recently proven possible (May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister). Until then it was believed to be physically impossible to run the mile in under 4 minutes.

In Vancouver both Roger Bannister and John Landry finished in under 4 minutes! Here in Merritt, riding on the euphoria of that spectacular race, runs were held for several years afterwards to find out who was the "Bannister" of the Nicola Valley. Stan Grimshire and his brother ran in the first three races. Stan won the first two with his brother second and his brother won the third with Stan second. Both of them gave credit to their lifestyle of hiking and climbing on nearby Swakum Mountain.
