Geocache Description:

This cache is a quick to find micro cache in the Ancient Capital of Mann.  It is stored near an information board at a good place to start a tour of the historical sites in Castletown. There is free parking adjacent.

The cache is roughly the same size as a 35mm film canister. Please bring a pen or pencil to sign the log.

There was a small prize for the FTF.

The name of the cache has been inspired by an extract from the Chronicles of England.

" the Frenschmen took the Ilde of Man, al save the Castel whech Ser Hew Tyrel manfully defended (kept): but thei of the ylde were fayn to gyve the Frenschmen a M. mare, that thei schuld not brenn her houses."*

In 1377 the improved defences of Castle Rushen are reputed to have protected Sir Hugh Tyrell and fellow castle residents from the threats of invading Frenchmen. The locals on the outside of the castle were not  so lucky however and had the buy off the French with a thousand marks to prevent their houses from being burned!!

* Capgrave. " Chronicles of England" (Manx Society, Vol. IV, p. 73).

Grateful thanks is given to Manx National Heritage (MNH) who have given permission for this cache to be sited on their property. Please remove and replace the cache carefully.

Well done to Fowler&Co for finding so quickly
