Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a fairly straightforward series hidden in the nature reserve surrounding the church in Pwllcrochan. They have been placed with the intention of persuading you to explore this beautiful and out-of-the-way place. This cache is a micro and should be a quick find. Please replace as you found it and be careful not to drop it into the marsh!

St Mary’s church was built in 1342 by Ralph Beneger, who is buried in the churchyard. The church and the area surrounding it are now owned by Valero, the oil refining company. The church is no longer used as a place of worship, but has been sensitively renovated and converted into an environmental and community centre containing modern conferencing and educational facilities.

The environment around the church is has been designated a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and provides a habitat for otters and three types of bats, as well as numerous other flora and fauna. This wildlife sanctuary consists of a pond area, marshy reed beds and ancient oak woodland and is open for the public to explore.

In partnership with Valero, volunteers from The Prince’s Trust have worked extremely hard to lay over a kilometre of boardwalks and 300 metres of paths through the marsh. The majority of the funding for the project came from a Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that gives grants to community and environmental projects across the UK.

The boardwalks are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs but may be a little uneven in places. Care must be taken in icy or wet conditions. Regrettably, no dogs except guide dogs are permitted on this site. There is a car parking area for several vehicles nearby (see waypoint).

This series of caches have been placed with the kind permission of Valero and the Countryside Council for Wales. We hope you enjoy discovering this hidden gem as much as we did.
