Geocache Description:

The first of three in a series to take you on a 2.8km circuit along the Lerderderg River, past market gardens, and along the Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh

This cache takes you on an enjoyable stroll on the edge of Bacchus Marsh.

Start your walk from the picnic area. (S37 41.206, E144 28.678) The stream flowing quietly on your right is the Lerderderg River. (The name Lerderderg is said to be based on an Aboriginal word which is possibly a corruption of "Larderdark" meaning 'larh' -stone house and 'dark' -peppermint gum.

A major tributary of the Werribee River, the Lerderderg is heritage listed because of its historical and natural qualities. Along this part of the trail are some large River Red Gum trees, a legacy of the past when this area was a wetland.

The first white settler was Kenneth Scobie Clarke who, in 1836, transported sheep and other livestock from George Town in Van Dieman's Land on behalf of the Great Lakes Pastoral Company. He took up land between the Werribee and Lerderderg Rivers.

However, the town is named after Captain William Henry Bacchus (also of Van Dieman's Land) who occupied the valley when Clarke headed west in 1838. The 'Marsh' part of the equation reflects the fact that the valley was once full of marshland associated with the river system, although these were drained and the riverbed altered by early European settlers.

This cache is hidden in a typical cacher's location, but skill will be required in retrieving and replacing the cache. the area is VERY popular with walkers, doggers and joggers, so skill will be needed in discretion.
