Geocache Description:

This is the seventh in a series of historic Randolph Township caches

Concord Methodist Church

Welcome to Concord Methodist Church! Thanks for stopping by for a visit.

The congregation of Concord Episcopal Methodist Church had its beginnings in 1819 when founder George Hoffman held classes in his home. By 1824, a log meeting house had been constructed on this site and sermons were being given by traveling Methodist preachers riding the Union Circuit. The so-called “Church on the Hill” was built in 1849. It was remodeled in 1881 and the bell tower was added in 1912. (see photo) The current Concord Church building to the north, which replaced the historic structure in October 1962, today is United Methodist. The first burial in Concord Cemetery was in 1825. Prior to this time, many individuals were buried in their own private farm cemeteries. In 1839, George Hoffman, who donated the land for the original church, died and was buried here. Others notables who are buried here include local nurseryman Sam Gingrich who designed and built folk art stone monuments in his park along Route 48 near Vinway Drive. Gingrich died in 1952 and all but one of his monuments (site of another cache) has been lost to road-widening in modern times.
