Geocache Description:

Hidden on Steenberg Buttress. After a lot of searching, we finally found the route, but running short of time and facing dark clouds and icy SE winds we decided to turn back - but not before we came across this unexpected refuge....

After spending a long time searching for the starting point for route up Steenberg Buttress using the vague description in the guide book, we finally found the path. A short way up, running short of time and with threatening black clouds, and an icy wind, we came across this unexpected refuge - the name of the cache will become apparent when you get there!

The intention was always to publish the cache once we had completed the route and could provide a full description - however, my fellow hiders (CapeDoc and The Pooks) are growing impatient!!!

From the parking co-ords, cross Boyes Drive and follow the distinct trail to S 34° 05.342 E 018° 26.771 (waypoint 1).

Leave the path and head directly up the steep slope to the bottom of the gully and the start of the route S 34° 05.460 E 018° 26.807. This area is being cleared of alien vegetation - an ongoing battle - and no clear path exists.

Follow the gully to the top (+/-310m). The Steenberg Buttress route continues up the face to the right. The cache can be found on the small ridge to the left.

If you are reasonably slim & agile you will be able to enter the "igloo" through the window, otherwise you can slide underneath on your belly - however, if size does not permit entry, the cache can be reached from the outside....

CAUTION!! - watch out for "Blister Bushes" (Peucedanum galbanum) next to the path in the first gulley. The leaves of the bush resemble those of celery. Although they appear innocuous, the leaves and stems contain a toxin that can produce painful blisters if the affected area is then exposed to sunlight / UV. If you do brush against a bush cover the affected area or use a high SPF sunscreen to prevent blisters forming. The Blister Bushes can be easily avoided if you know what to look for!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peucedanum_galbanum
