Geocache Description:

When Spanish and Native American feast days meet...

If it wasn't for the fact that you can't park on the main street here, you could get the info you need to log this cache from your car. But you'd miss out, so park on the side street. The co-ordinates given are actually for a safe place to park along the side-street. Jim sort of stumbled across this while doing something else; we've passed by here dozens of times, but never noticed this before.

N.B. Jim drove by here on 12 April, 2005, and noticed that the wooden sign-boards, mentioned below and which had nothing in them, are now gone, and the whole dirt area is covered in redwood "fir bark". No idea why this was done

At the SW corner there is a concrete monument, clean and in good repair, with bronze plaques on it. To post your find, please send us an e-mail or Message with the answers (found on the plaques) to the questions below, but please don't post them in your log! However, if you happen to know anything about why the sign posts along the short trail are blank (we suspect repeated vandalism that became too onerous to clean up), and if there are plans to do anything more with this site, please post with your log. We're always eager to learn more about local history. Hard to imagine, with the freeway right there and all, what this must have looked like 220 years ago. No trace appears to remain.

The Questions

  1. What governmental body is named on the small round medallion near the top of the monument? Give its full name.
  2. What year was it founded?
  3. This is Ventura County Landmark # ___ (fill in the blank).
  4. When was this landmark designated (full date)?
  5. Which two yearly events are commemorated by this landmark?
  6. What time of year did they happen to coincide?
  7. What modern event used to be planned at the same time, in honor of this older coincidence?

Thanks for visiting! If you head eastward on the main street (but not on Main Street ), check out the big gun in the park a few blocks up.
