Geocache Description:

Cache is located on property previously occupied by the Steelman-Treen tavern (currently owned by the county). There is room to park on the side of the road near the historic marker.
Please be wary of old barbwire in the area.

Text from the sign:
"STEELMAN-TREEN TAVERN
This site was an important stage stop on the route from Somers Point to Cooper's Ferry. The tavern was to James Steelman in June 1770. Steelman, born in 1750, was the son of Frederick and Sarah Somers Steelman and brother of Andrew Steelman killed by the notorious Tory John Bacon in Oct 1782 on Long Beach Island. The inn served as an early meeting place and in 1827 was licensed to William Treen. In 1831, C.B. Treen was manager followed by George Treen in 1834. Until the 1940's the building was occupied as a private residence. Ownership continued in a descendant of the Treen family until the building was finally razed in the summer of 1975."
