Le canal du Midi ou canal des Deux Mers est un canal français qui
relie la Garonne à la mer Méditerranée. Il fournit, avec le canal
latéral à la Garonne, une voie navigable de l'Atlantique à la mer
Méditerranée. Il a été considéré par ses contemporains comme étant
le plus grand chantier du XVIIe siècle.
Pendant quinze ans, près de 12 000 ouvriers travaillent à la
réalisation du canal.
Depuis 1996, il est classé dans la liste du patrimoine de
l'humanité par l'UNESCO.

The Canal du Midi or Canal des Deux Mers is a 240 km long canal in
the south of France, le Midi. The canal runs from the city of
Toulouse down to the Mediterranean port of Sète.
The original purpose of the Canal du Midi was to be a shortcut
between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, avoiding the long sea
voyage around hostile Spain, Barbary pirates, and a trip that in
the 17th century required a full month of sailing.
The construction of the Canal du Midi was considered by people in
the 17th century as the biggest project of the day. Even today, it
is seen as a marvelous engineering accomplishment and is the most
popular pleasure waterway in Europe.
At peak there were 12,000 labourers on the whole project including
600 women.
The Canal du Midi became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year
1996.

the impressive construction. From the proper position the cache can
be seen and it can be taken with long arms. Don't drop it!

Der 240 km lange Canal du Midi (deutsch: Kanal des Südens;
ursprüngliche Bezeichnung: Canal Royal) verbindet in Südfrankreich
das Mittelmeer mit der Stadt Toulouse.
Der Canal du Midi gilt als eine der größten Ingenieurleistungen der
Zeit, und er war zweifellos die größte Baustelle im Europa des 17.
Jahrhunderts. Am Bau waren bis zu 12.000 Arbeiter beteiligt.
Obwohl beim Bau kaum mehr technische Hilfsmittel zur Verfügung
standen als Schaufeln, Hacken und Ochsenkarren, wurde der 240 km
lange Kanal in nur 14 Jahren erbaut, eine Leistung, die selbst im
21. Jahrhundert nur schwer zu unterbieten wäre.
Der Canal du Midi wurde im Jahr 1996 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe
ernannt.
