Historical evidence from the year 1522 testifies that there was a small wooden church in place of the current tower of the Saint Trinity Church. In 1574 Gotthard Kettler, the duke of Courland and Semigalia, ordered a new masonry house of worship to be built, and it is considered that it was designed by Dutch building master Joris Joriszn Frese. The Saint Trinity Church was one of the first Lutheran masonry churches built in Europe, and the first masonry building in Jelgava. The house of prayer was consecrated on the 25th of May 1615. The tower came as an addition to the church in 1686-1688, and its architect was Martin Knoch. After the construction was complete, the tower reached 49.68 m. First clock on the tower was erected in 1611. In 1862, following the directions from the architect Emil Strauss, the tower had its height increased and now, together with the gilded cross, it measured 80.5 m high.

On the 27th of July 1944, the Soviet aviation raid destroyed most of the city and the Jelgava Saint Trinity Church too was bombed and burnt.

The tower has been restored. There is tourist information center, historical displays, conference hall, restaurant, exhibition hall and viewing platform.
