I spent many summers here as a kid and this place really feels like home. It's a great place to spend the day with friends and family. I remember the Maori carving in the picture being placed here at the dawn of the new Millenium.
Whitireia Park, in Porirua city, is a headland with commanding views over Mana Island, Porirua Harbour and its environs. You can walk the coastal track from Te Onepoto Bay to Onehunga Bay and savour spectacular views of the surrounding area from the inland track.
Te Onepoto Bay provides good habitat for many water birds, the estuary being a rich feeding ground. Kingfishers frequent the bay, eating insects, crabs and small fish and shellfish which are exposed at low tide.
