Geocache Description:

This geocache is located on the traditional homelands of the Kainai (Blood) Tribe, who are part of the Siksikaitsiitapi (Blackfoot) Confederacy. The Blackfoot word for the land of the Kainai is Kainaisksahko. Here is some information on the Kainai, from http://bloodtribe.org/

"The Blood Tribe has a population of 12,800 (2015) occupying approximately 549.7 square miles with a Timber Limit in the Rocky Mountains of approximately 7.5 square miles. Three rivers, the Old Man, St. Mary and Belly, border the Blood reserve. The traditional Blackfoot territory extends from the Rocky Mountains to the West; the Sand Hills to the East; to the North Saskatchewan in the North, and the Yellowstone in the South. The Blood Tribe Administration situated in Stand Off is the administrative centre of the Blood Tribe."

Those who placed this geocache are descendents of the early settler-colonizers of Magrath, who can offer a story about the red-roofed house closest to you (the "Little House on the Coulee": This was likely a mail order house shipped through the railroad and built by Heber Harker in the 1910s. It originally sat on the corners of 3rd Ave. S and 2nd St. W and looked like this:

Rachel Ackroyd and Frank Forsyth lived in this house with their seven children (in three bedrooms with one outhouse) from 1921 until 1927, when they moved to Hill Spring. Then, in 1990, their son Howard and his wife Zella Dague learned the then-owners were tearing the house down and asked if they could have it if they moved it. When the owners agreed, they put the house on a tractor trailer and moved it four blocks to where it is now.

We are slowly building the relationship between the Forsyth/Ackroyd families (whose ancestors were among the settler colonizers of Magrath) and the First Nations peoples who have been connected to this land for centuries. We hope you will also take the time to learn more about the Kainai and the Siksikaitsiitapi Confederacy, from their words. As we uncover more, we will update this description and add new prizes - so check back! Congrats to chiefmtn for getting the FTF prize, which comes from the Museum of the Plains Indians in Browning, Montana!

Make sure to fit this cache snugly back where you found it (but not so snugly it can't be pulled back out)! Check the hint and activity log if the coordinates seem to be taking you into a field (it's not in a field).

First Nations information for any space you occupy can be found on the Native Lands app (https://native-land.ca/mobile-app/).
