Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the Thurmond-Minden Trail in New River Gorge National River and requires a two mile round trip walk. Park at the trailhead at these coordinates: N 37 56.608 W 081 05.278. Please stay on the designated trail. You do not have to venture off the trail to find this cache. Be sure to visit the Thurmond Train Depot while you are in the area!


The Coal Heritage GeoTrail is a geocaching trail consisting of sixteen caches within the National Coal Heritage Area in southern West Virginia. Along the GeoTrail, geocachers will travel three scenic byways: the Coal Heritage Trail, the Paint Creek Scenic Trail, and the Midland Trail. In each cache, geocachers will find special clues that will help them complete a puzzle found in the official Coal Heritage GeoTrail brochure. Geocachers can then bring their completed brochures to a redemption site to receive a commemorative Coal Heritage GeoTrail patch. “The fundamental purpose of the National Park Service (NPS) is to ‘conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. (16 U.S.C. 1).’ Placing a cache on NPS lands without a permit is a violation of NPS regulations. These regulations are intended to protect the fragile environment and the natural, cultural and historical resources found in parks. You are ultimately responsible for the cache, so please make sure you know and understand the rules and regulations.”

Guidelines for Searching for GPS-Based Activity Caches

• No digging or disturbing of rocks, soil or vegetation
• No placement of tobacco, ammunition, weapons, drugs (medications), alcohol, food, items with vulgar or pornographic content, personal/hygiene products, chemicals or scented/perfumed items/substances, explosives/fireworks, advertising materials in cache
• Searchers will observe park hours and closures during cache searches
• Use of metal detectors is prohibited
