This is instalment #2 of a CITO which is part of Abbotsford's "April 2023 Community Clean-Up Month," an Abbotsford clean-up awareness campaign aimed at beautifying the streets and parks. Individuals can participate either as part of a larger group (like this CITO) or individually to contribute to the continued improvement of Abbotsford. Although this was an April initiative extending Earthday to an "Earth-month" the City of Abbotsford wants this to become a regular habit for people to take care of the city they live in.
For those interested in making a more lasting impact, we strongly encourage you to attend an online Zoom orientation meeting where you will learn about expectations, safety considerations, contacts for city parks volunteer coordinators and city bylaw officers in case there are any questions or concerns. The city will also provide various supplies, including garbage bags, gloves, trash pick-up sticks and pink flagging tape for identifying hazardous materials like hypodermic needles.
Here is the link to the Abbotsford website explaining the beautification plans for April.
Community Clean Up Month
The MAIN Goal of this CITO Is to clean up what we can in about an hour. Last month we focused on the forest East of the parking lot, this time we will focus on the West side
I personally have attended the online ZOOM orientation session and the in person mini orientation / supply handout session
Main POINTS to keep in mind:
1) DO NOT TOUCH ANY hazardous materials - glass, hypodermic needles etc. Anything that may hurt you can be marked with pink flagging tape and a designated City of Abbotsford employee will come to remove the material in question.
2) Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing and footwear for the weather that day and clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
3) Collected garbage and garbage bags can be left in the garbage bins of the park and if they are overflowing bring it to my attention and I will notify city staff
4) HAVE FUN, and know you are helping the community we live in be a little better then the way we found it.
I WILL PROVIDE THE APPROPRIATE MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES but feel free to bring your own gardening gloves and "trash pick up sticks"
PLEASE record your WILL ATTEND as early as possible so I can pick up more supplies for all attendees so we do not run out
Looking forward to hosting my second CITO and hope to make this an ongoing monthly event.
