This is an extreme geocache.
It is not for everybody.
Cache is located about .20 from the parking lot.
It's very important that you read the entire description before
attempting this cache. Not following the directions may result
in destroying the cache container system. So now, the fun
stuff..
"Hydrophobia" is the 2nd cache in my "phobia" series.
The cache container can be very difficult to find and retrieve
if you don't have the right equipment. I'd say it's almost
impossible without some type of underwater gear.
The cache is located in an abandoned rock quarry and is no
further than 15' from where rock meets water. I did not place this
cache in order to frustrate geocachers, but wanted to make a more
challenging hide than most others. If you want help or hints, or
even the exact location of the cache, just send an email and I will
get back to you usually within a day. I'd even be happy to assist
you at the cache site.
Once the cache is located, there are two carabiners attaching
the container to an anchor and buoy. Simply disconnect one
carabiner from the other to bring the container on land to sign the
logbook. The detached carabiner still underwater is attached to a
buoy, so it will float stationary. The container is a pop top
waterproof container. Remember exactly where you found it, because
replacing it might be the real challenge.
In order to log this find, you must physically retrieve this
container. You cannot: Use dredging equipment of any kind. For
example, you can't use fishing nets in attempt to snag the
container, tree branches, oars, fishing line, rope, ...you must
actually go into and under the water, unlatch the carabiner by
hand, sign the logbook and rehook to the carabiner. 2 reasons.
First reason is that this is supposed to be a challenge. Second
reason is that the anchor and buoy system can be destroyed if it's
dragged out of the water. Do not pull on the container when you
find it, because it will break off leaving you with a headful of
question marks, a DNF, and a archived cache. I'm sure you all
understand my point :D
Although this spot looks like it was a popular swimming area
back in the 70's, today it has lots of broken glass, sharp metal
objects and who knows what else. I do know that it isn't toxic
because there are northern water snakes, copperheads, fish, ducks
and turtles in and around the GZ.
Most importantly, Be careful! If you are not in good physical
shape, cannot swim, cannot tread water for extended periods of
time, afraid of dark and brackish water, snakes, black flies,
mosquitos, etc...this cache is not for you.
One last thing I should mention. YOU ARE DOING THIS CACHE AT
YOUR OWN RISK.
Congratulations to Woodlit for FTF!
