The beloved and historic Clamshell Railroad transported people, oysters, cranberries and more up and down the Long Beach Peninsula before there were paved roads! Known as the train that ran by the tide table, not by the time table, retrace the whistle stops and learn about the early days of transportation out here at the "end of the road".
The Fort Columbia stop was used both by local residents as well as military passengers who were stationed at the Fort. Fort Columbia was an important outpost which guarded the mouth of the Columbia River during the World Wars, and has now been transformed into a scenic and historic State Park. Many of the original buildings and armaments are still standing and available for viewing.
The tunnel seen in the photo was constructed for, and used for many years, by the Clamshell Railroad to transport people and cargo between the Megler Ferry and Nahcotta at the northern end of its run.
