Geocache Description:

Along the length of Bushy Beach a track with platforms is ideal for viewing our precious yellow-eyed penguins or Hoiho. Considered to be the world's rarest penguin, they nest in the mud banks along the length of Bushy Beach.

The yellow-eyed penguin or hoiho is bigger and more rare than the blue penguin. This is an ideal site as these penguins need a bush environment. To see the penguins you can drive along upper Tyne Street and down Bushy Beach Road. The penguins come ashore about two hours before dark. They can be watched from the viewing hide free of charge, or you can join a forty minute tour. Yellow-eyed penguins are shy and easily disturbed. For that reason it is recommended that they be viewed from hides or in the company of a tour operator. There are a number of public hides on the Otago coastline, as well as several tour operators who offer controlled close encounters with penguins. Bushy Beach Track overlooks the coastal scrub habitat of yellow-eyed penguin/hoiho, little penguin/kororā, sooty shearwater/tītī and shags.

From a platform you can see New Zealand fur seals/kekeno on the rocks below. Carry on further to the hide to get the best viewing of penguins. New Zealand sea lions and elephant seals are occassional visitors to this beach. To avoid disturbing the penguins, keep off the beach at after 3 pm. Adult penguins can return to feed their young at any time of the day but usually cross the beach before 9am and after 3pm.

The cache is a tethered bison tube container with logbook only. BYOP. It is hidden near the penguin hide so it is highly likely that you may have to contend with muggles especially after 3pm. As the cache name suggests it can be cold and windy at GZ so take warm clothing.
