Geocache Description:

The summit of Castle Crag Fort

This cache is at the highest point of the Fort. Pretty well concealed - please leave the same way or it may go the way of the original cache!

The cache can be reached by way of Shoulthwaite Shoulder - it is 700m further on and after 460m you reach signposts - both left to Raven Crag summit (do go - great view and a cache) and right to the Fort. Due to the afforestation from time to time you will lose the signal but you will be o/k on the summit. The walk is easy but I've graded it 3 because to get to the fort you have to take a slightly exposed circle which is not for anyone suffering from vertigo

For hillwalkers a nicer way is to cross the Thirlmere dam wall on the back road and park just over it (now pay & display) where the road forks. 200m right (north) opposite another small parking spot a footpath signs leads you very steeply uphill through the woods (crossing two forestry roads)until it flattens out at the signposts already mentioned. Tough, but splendid. Return via the Shoulthwaite Shoulder cache.

Or (if you've already got it) a nice way is to continue on the forestry road for one kilometre until you reach a gate.

You will have seen a faint path following Shoulthwaite Gill down on you right and it is on the map - although not where it actually exists. You have to cross several gills and these are difficult after rain (if you can see a waterfall up the valley from the cache you can be pretty certain it'll be adventurous!). There's now another cache up there!

Through the gate over the gill and follow it steadily down - again this way is not for anyone suffering from vertigo because it is half way up a steep bank. Eventually you reach a bridge just before a stile and the forestry road back.
