Mucking Around Kellogg
Island |
Kellogg
Island is close to the west side of the Duwamish Waterway, across
from and slightly south of the Diagonal Street launch point.
Kellogg Island was originally part of the much larger Anderson
Island and the approximate northern edge of the Duwamish estuary
before the filling of Harbor Island and the development of the
south Seattle industrial area. The waterway was dredged to the east
of the original channel bend, creating the island. Kellogg Island's
original elevation, formerly just above high tide, was raised by
dredging spoils dumped on the south end. This miniature wilderness
of brambles, brush, and hidden grassy glens is worth a gingerly
stroll on a sunny spring day. Late in the summer a cornucopia of
largely unpicked blackberries makes a fully sufficient reason to
visit.
