Built in 1936 for $676.87, Table Rock Lookout has been going strong
for 72+ years. It is listed on the National Historic Lookout
Register. There's a humorous story to go along with the rich
history of this mountaintop.
One morning soon after the lookout's construction, the staffer
awoke to find several elephants and camels around the station.
After some eye blinking and rubbing and a little consternation, it
was discovered that a circus troop had bedded down there in the
middle of the night. Seems their van broke down in Unity and the
small cavalcade was trecking cross-country to meet its next
engagement. There are pictures of this event in the historical
files in the Supervisor's Office of the Wallowa-Whitman National
Forest.
The road is graded the first 6 miles from NFD 13, but gets
consistently rougher the last 5 which is driveable by most medium
clearance vehicles. Table Rock L.O. is well-marked the entire way
up. The lookout building was staffed when the cache was placed, but
the day was cold and damp, so we didn't actually see anyone on
duty. You'll be searching for a camo-painted 4-cup lock-n-lock.
Inside you'll find a logbook, moisture absorber, stash-sheet,
geocoin, and pen.
Note: This cache bisects the Monument Rock Wilderness
established in 1984. Permission was obtained since wilderness
caches require permission to be approved by groundspeak.
Thank you, Logscaler!
