Geocache Description:

This cache is near one of two vernal pools. These pools are essential for reptiles and amphibians to mate.

There is a healthy population of spotted salamanders and wood frogs who utilize these pools for reproduction. There are lots of green frogs who hang out in the waters of the pools as well. They feed on the salamanders and the tadpoles in the pools. On very warm days you may also find a fair amount of garter snakes in the area, looking for a small frog or salamander to feed on as well. You are invited to look at the life in and around the ponds (best seen using polarized glasses), but please don’t touch the wildlife or take any eggs or tadpoles home.

Hop Brook Lake park is open from 8:00 a.m. – about a half hour before sunset . There is a fee $4.00 per vehicle to enter the park (fee booth is open the weekend before Memorial Day to the weekend after Labor Day from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. During the off-season, there is a small parking lot you can park in and walk down into the park. For further details on Hop Brook Lake check out the following link: (visit link)
Fee booth attendants and park kiosks usually have maps for you to use.
Check out other caches hidden in the park. We believe there are a few President’s series letterboxes hidden in the park as well.
NOTE: Cache will be available on 5/19/2012 @ 10:00 am as a part of our “Family Fishing and Fun Day” event for National Kids to Parks Initiative. The event will be held at the Pines Shelter in the park. Admission fee to the park will be waived for this event.
