Auf dieser Straße war am 11. Januar 1985 nach einem tödlichen Unfall mit einem Raktentriebwerk (nur wenige Meter von hier) richtig etwas los. Die International Veterans Association Neckarsulm e.V. hat am Ort des Geschehens (das ehemalige Fort Redleg, auf dem Waldheim-Gelände) einen Gedenkstein gesetzt.
Ein ganz gewöhnlicher Freitag, die Heilbronner und die hier stationierten amerikanische Soldaten freuen sich auf das Wochenende. Die eisige Kälte von 20 Grad Minus ist an diesem 11. Januar 1985 das alles beherrschende Thema. Das Unterland liegt unter einer hohen Schneedecke. Ab 14 Uhr aber ist nichts mehr, wie es vorher war. Das AFN-Radioprogramm (Army-Sender) unterbricht das Programm:
"Achtung. Sondermeldung. Heilbronn, Germany. Auf Fort Redleg hat es eine Explosion gegeben."
Die Zugangsstrassen der Waldheide waren in kürzester Zeit gesperrt. Überall Polizei, Feuerwehr, Ambulanzen und Helikopter. Ein 3316 Grad heißer Feuerball war im Motor einer -auf der Waldheide stationierten- Pershing Rakete entstanden und führte zum Unglück. Auslöser war eine elektronische Entladung im Raketentreibstoff. Zwei US-Soldaten sind sofort tot, ein Dritter stirbt noch an der Unfallstelle. Ein lebensgefährlich verletzter GI wird mit dem Hubschrauber in die Spezialabteilung für Verbrennungen ins Stuttgarter Marienhospital geflogen, acht weitere Schwerverletzte werden in die umliegende Krankenhäuser eingeliefert.
Jedes Jahr lädt die International Veterans Association Neckarsulm e.V. zu einer Gedenkfeier an das Pershing-Mahnmal ein, um den Opfern der Katastrophe zu gedenken.

On a normal ordinary Friday, the citizens of Heilbronn and the American Soldiers stationed there are looking forward to the weekend. On this January 11, 1985, the icy chill of minus 20 degrees Celsius is the main topic of the day, and the lowlands below are covered in a deep snow. When all of sudden at 14:00 hours, nothing will ever be the same as it was before. The AFN radio programm is interrupted suddenly:
"This is a Special Breaking News alarm. In Heilbronn, Germany, upon the U.S. Army military site Fort Redleg, there has been an explosion."
Everything at Waldheide is stopped and locked down and everywhere is police, firemen, ambulances and helicopters. Suddenly and without any warning, a Pershing II Rocket motor exploded with a 3316 Celcius hot fireball back-blast, causing this terrible accident. The trigger that set this explosion off was anelectrostatic discharge in the rocket fuel. Two U.S. soldiers are killed instantly and a third one dies later at the accident site. A critically injured GI was flown by helicopter to the Special Burns Department in the Marien hospital in Stuttgart, and eight more that were injured are hospitalized in nearby hospitals.
Every year the International Veterans Association Neckarsulm e.V. invites the surrounding communities to remember this accident with a Memorial Service at the Pershing Memorial site to commemorate and honor the victime of this disaster.
