Charasteristic shingle banks on the northern part of Öland./Särpräglade klapperstensfält på norre Öland.



Geologically Öland is a relative young island. In the northwestern part you can find vertical limestone stacks, limestone plateaus and - parallel with the shore - wide shingle banks. These banks were disposited here by the last inland ice for about 500 mio years ago. Over the next thousand years the land has risen from the sea and the banks have been formed by waves and wind. The limestone along the shoreline broke into smaller pieces and were rounded by the water.

The shingle banks are littered with these small flat limestone pebbles (swedish: “klappersten”) and you can find many different fossils here, f.ex. trilobits and brachiopods.

Remember: Collecting or removing of these fossils is not permitted!!!

Log tasks:
Earthcaches are a special type of geocaches, who will teach you about the geologi of the world. You will not find a cachebox at the coordinate, but you have to prove your presence and your new geological knowledge by following these instructions:

AFTER you have send your answers, you are welcome to log the cache. If your answers can't be approved, we will contact you!

Question 2: OBS (Build a limestone cairn and tell us how high you can build it.)
This logtask is no longer applicable (pr.april 2020), because the authorities have made new rules about building cairnes. Thanks to Mimsa for making us aware of this.
Instead we ask you to answer the question: How many banks can you see from here?

(Optional logging task) To proof your visit: Go to the coordinates and make a photo of yourself with your GPS and with the Blue Jungfrun in the background.

Geologisk sett är Öland en relativ ung ö. På öns norrvästra del finns det kalkstensformationer och –platåer. Avlagringar som har bildats när ön lyfte sig efter senaste istiden för ca. 500 milljoner år sen. Dessa kalksten har sen – genom flera tusen år – eroderats och påverkats av vågor och vind. De har slipats och rundats genom friktion mot varandra och ligger nu som stora klapperstensfält parallelt med kusten. De äldsta finns längst upp. Klapperstensfälten består av mindre klappersten som är rika på fossiler som trilobiter och brachiopoder.

Kom i håg att det inte är tillåtet att samla eller ta bort fossilerna.
