Note: this cache is located in a Wildlife Management Area used
for hunting 42 days a year. The other 323 days each year, it's open
to the public, admission is free, and hunting is prohibited. You
can visit anytime, but ideally you should avoid being in the WMA
during hunting as a courtesy to the hunters.
The hunting days are typically the latter half of October, the
latter 2/3 of November, five days in mid-December, a weekend in
mid-March and a three-day weekend at the beginning of April. For
hunting regulations as well as the specific hunting dates for the
current year, see
http://wld.fwc.state.fl.us/hunting
Cache is located in the Bradwell Unit. The entrance is a couple
of hundred yards east of the intersection of 20 and 267 in eastern
Liberty County.
Coords shown above are the place you should park. The cache
itself is at N 30° 22.732', W 084° 41.071'.
I have listed the coords this way so that cachers who just
download the main coords into their GPSr without reading the cache
listing won't find it by trespassing on private land -- and
possibly end up among hunters without knowing it.
Cache is a large plastic screw-top jar, painted in camo
colors.
"This cache is located in an area used heavily for moonshining
during prohibition. Besides the 40+ year old pet cemetery near the
cache site there are many artifacts and old structures to be found
in the general area (1450 acres), including several old cars and an
ancient abandoned Government Car w/key still in ignition! (Local
legend states that an Treasury Agent disappeared in this area never
to be found)."
For those who visited the original Abandoned Pet Cemetery: This
cache is only a few steps from where that one was. While the
original cache was located where hunters and passersby could easily
trip over it if they weren't watching their step, this one is a bit
farther off the beaten path. The general location is the same but
the hide is different.
One other bit of trivia: while exploring down the old roadbed to
the west, I found a single thumbtack stuck in a tree with red
reflector tape on it. Purpose unknown; as far as I know, there is
no night cache in this area. Perhaps hunters placed it to help them
find their way after dark -- but there's not supposed to be any
hunting in here after dark.
