Geocache Description:

This is a great site for my first hide. It is in a quiet area of North Little Rock most people are not familiar, almost forgotten.Parking is just a few steps away. I hope you relax a minute and take time to think about the impact this one man had on the world and this church had on the development of our city.

You are looking for an index card box. I hope you enjoy the hunt and the place I picked out.

CONGRAT! to Silverjedi for FTF!

Most people have heard the legend of St. Patrick driving the snake out of Ireland. St. Patrick was a Catholic priest in the 4-5 century credited for his hard work converting the people of Ireland from worshipping pagan gods to Christianity. He converted noble men and Druid priests to Christianity. He established more than two hundred churches and monasteries in the county. He also brought reading and writing to the area, especially the teachings of Jesus Christ to the people of Ireland. The legend of St. Patrick driving the snakes from Ireland is a metaphor for converting the pagan people who used snakes as symbols of gods to Christians. St. Patrick used the symbol of the shamrock to help explain the Holy Trinity to the people of Ireland. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland where he lived about forty years of his life, but he was not Irish.
The other thing I like about this place is the history. I bet most of you did not know Catholics held the first formal church services in North Little Rock. They took place near the river in 1871. This core group of worshipers later became St. Patrick’s Catholic Church congregation. Prior to this Catholics would take the ferry across the river to attend church services in Little Rock. Since 1931 this has been the current site of the church. St. Patrick Catholic School established in 1895 merged with its sister school St. Mary’s in 2004. It now operates under the name of North Little Rock Catholic Academy. Currently all classes at located at the St. Mary’s campus about a mile from here. Catholic missionaries and Catholic Churches played an important role in settling the communities along the Arkansas River. Catholic Missionaries not only brought religion to the area but much needed education to the children.
