Geocache Description:

The terrain of Mackinac Island is varied. Once you head away from the shoreline, the elevation increases, with mostly smaller rolling terrain once you're on top. Transportation on the island is limited to walking, bicycling or horses. I have not placed any cache that would require you to scale any steep grade. If you think you need to climb or descend any steep grade, there's a better way to approach from a different road or trail.

This cache is now at a private resident's home. It has been placed with their permission. Please be respectful of the owners and their neighbors.

This is a memorial cache to a great family's (South Lyon Trekkers) pet. The family was planning to attend my wife's annual Spring Fling event held on this island. But G's time had come so they couldn't make it. All of the attendees felt for their loss.

G. That's what she was usually called. Her name was Ginger. She had many nicknames, but G was simple and she knew who she was: a yellow Labrador Retriever that was sweet, powerful, obedient, and part of the South Lyon Trekkers.

In 2012, the South Lyon Trekkers were scheduled to attend the Spring Fling on Mackinac Island, an event that they looked forward to each year. Unfortunately, they missed the event when G had to be put down. Her 11 years had caught up with her, and pain had set in. Her time came on April 27, 2012.

She really wasn't much of a caching dog. Short walks in the park to get caches didn't suit her. Her outings were exploring the northern Michigan woods and jumping into muddy creeks and clear streams. The smells of the woods would drive her crazy. She wanted to meet all the animals. That same nose always found its way home.

G was a faithful dog who watched over the family, tolerant of the things little kids do as they grow up. She made a life-long friend with the UPS man because he had treats. Her tail never stopped wagging, regardless what structure or person got in the way. G was a dog that was a big part of the lives of the South Lyon Trekkers. She was loved and will be greatly missed. This cache is a tribute to Ginger.

G, Ready to go!

Those of us who love our furry friends know how much the loss of a beloved pet affects our hearts and our souls. This cache is not only a tribute to Ginger, but to all of those four-footed friends whom we've loved and lost. Until we cross over The Rainbow Bridge to be with our furry companions, we will miss them deeply.

I highly recommend picking up an "Mackinac Island Map" from the information booth across the street from the Arnold dock. If the maps are not in the holders on the front of the building, look on the side of the building. For your convenience and planning, you can view or print the PDF file for the Mackinac Island Map. The one available at the information booth is printed on a glossy paper and holds up fairly well when repeatedly tucked in and out of a pocket or caching bag.

I read many of the logs that are posted on my caches, but sometimes I can't read all emails. If you find a problem with any of my caches, please post a "Needs Maintenance" log. Logs of that type are filtered into a special inbox that gets 100% read. Thank you.
